Locked in her room day after day, a woman who lives with her son and his family whiles away her time watching television. Except for an occasional visit from her granddaughter, she is virtually ignored. The daughter-in-law resents having to put aside her career plans to take care of her husband's mother and wants to place her in a nursing home. The granddaughter, upset about growing domestic conflict and the treatment her grandmother is receiving, implores hers parents to get professional counselling. The name APUD was coined for amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation; this process is similar to that seen in neurones. APUD cells were named by Pearse to organize his observations on peptide-secreting cells, particularly those from the GI tract. These cells take up precursors of biologically active amines to produce active amine through intracellular decarboxylation with subsequent storage of the amine product in secretory vesicles.
